Wow, so more than one friend and I have become a bit cross about the health care reform thing. So before getting amped up about something I didn't quite understand I read up a bit. YES, I've read the bill (at least around 130 pages at this point), maybe not completely though, enough to know what is stands for and what its attempting to do.
August 11, 2009 - Affordable Health Care Fued: Truth Uncovered
Honestly, when looked at in context this thing is fucking awesome. I won't say its the cure all and but honestly I think Obama and the Democrats aren't doing a very good job at pushing this for what it is. The title really does say it all; America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009.
So getting back to this feud, my friend sent me a link to a list that has been making it rounds and unfortunately misinforming so many people. Since I had already begun reading through the bill I decided to investigate some of the items in the list. Here is what I started to come up with...
• Page 22: Mandates audits of all employers that self-insure!
What it really says: The section this is in outlines the standards for which the affordable health care will be based on. The Commission’s goal is to work with other departments and complete a study of how insurance is maintained and used at this current time. This is ideally to gather parameters to set those standards to which insurance plans will be based.
• Page 29: Admission: your health care will be rationed!
What it really says: False, this is simply outlining minimum figures for cost-sharing. In fact, on page 27 it states “(3) does not impose any annual or lifetime limit on the coverage of covered health care items and services;” this in regard TO SEC. 122. ESSENTIAL BENEFITS PACKAGE DEFINED
• Page 30: A government committee will decide what treatments and benefits you get (and, unlike an insurer, there will be no appeals process)
What it really says: The committee will define three (3) levels of plans and what they include, this will be the foundation for which insurance companies will define their plans that are offered as a public option. “There is established a private-public advisory committee which shall be a panel of medical and other experts to be known as the Health Benefits Advisory Committee to recommend covered benefits and essential, enhanced,
and premium plans.”
• Page 42: The "Health Choices Commissioner" will decide health benefits for you. You will have no choice. None.
What it really says: Dictatorship? No. Page 42 and those following outline what the commissions duties are and not that he will dictate, though simply ‘Job Duties’ as we all have.
• Page 50: All non-US citizens, illegal or not, will be provided with free health care services.
What it really says: LOL, this one is awesome but again, no. This section states that these requirement within do NOT override any state laws or Public Health Services already in place. Also under “SEC. 152. PROHIBITING DISCRIMINATION IN HEALTH CARE” says that the services will be provided without regard to “personal characteristics”.
• Page 58: Every person will be issued a National ID Healthcard.
What it really says: Wow, not even a mention of an ID card at all. The page states that this program should run efficiently and in real-time using computers and any technology available to help identify if your able to receive coverage, etc.
• Page 59: The federal government will have direct, real-time access to all individual bank accounts for electronic funds transfer.
What it really says: I think they got ‘real-time’ from the previous page, though they want to make the option available for people to pay electronically. Wait, we do that already with taxes, utility bills, cable and even your Internet, oh my! Oh, oh, checkout Page 99, which states that you can page the insurance companies directly.
• Page 65: Taxpayers will subsidize all union retiree and community organizer health plans (example: SEIU, UAW and ACORN)
What it really says: This one is pretty clear… “Not later than 90 days after
the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Health and Human Services shall establish a temporary reinsurance program (in this section referred to as the ‘‘reinsurance program’’) to provide reimbursement to assist participating employment-based plans with the cost of providing health benefits to retirees and to eligible spouses, surviving spouses and dependents of such retirees.” Not so horrible is it?
• Page 72: All private health care plans must conform to government rules to participate in a health care Exchange.
What it really says: Yes, this is actually true! Is it so horrible to hold a company to standards?
After I got through those points, I thought about it and I wanted to see about finding where this list came from. In the progress of that I found a blog on Blippitt, which covers the entire list. After checking my initial findings against his, it was clear the list is snake oil. Its still hard to tell where the list originated though made it through some illiterate rednecks and moved on from there. Mr. Robert "Fucking Retarded" Wenzel compiled it from a Twitter feed of a Mr Peter Fleckstein. This is no reporting people, Twitter is not research. It's also been posed on DefenseoftheRepublic.com and re-posted as new on so many others.
What more can I say; start reading the bill for yourself, don't take anyone's word for what is. That includes mine.
Back to ...the Fuck stops here!; Now accepting Ameros or Tears of Palin!
